"...Sourtooth are a band who have existed since summer 1997 under various names and line-ups, solidifying into the band we have now in the final months of 1998. We take our music VERY seriously but like to counter this earnest outlook with our light-hearted personalities. We are all children of the world, have been around the block a few times even though we all average out about the age of 21, and we hope this shines through in our music.

"There's VICTORIA; bassist, guitarist and vocalist. Energetic, rough'n'ready dyke with a big mouth and a heart to match.
andy.jpg (2989 bytes)
ANDREW; drummer. A sensitive, unassuming man at odds with his role in the band, likes to think he dresses well.
emily.jpg (6141 bytes)
EMILY
; guitarist and bassist. Token yank, she joined the band recently but has stamped clearly her americanisms more firmly than we could.

And lastly, MARTIN; guitarist and vocalist. The calming pop force within the band, sings like a bird and milgavie-born romeo, still lives at home.

"We hope you enjoy our music, we've made extensive efforts to make it as challenging and intense, yet also melodic as possible for a bunch of jocks with yank comrade."

NOTE: The Lineup has since changed...Emily & Martin are gone and the fabulous Simone Hormone of Wack Cat fame has joined on bass.  But the lineup on the 7" is the above one.

Reviews of "The Screen Test" 7" split with the Makeshift Conspiracy

from MRR August 2000
The Makeshift Conspiracy/Sourtooth split ep

The Makeshift Conspiracy are a now defunct band in the vein of what can best be described as the new generation of indie rock, post riot grrls. It's kinda mellow. It has punches of anger. It has middle eights of sad. Sort of like GEEK meets the Fontaine songs of VERSUS. Sourtooth might still be together. It's hard to decipher from the packaging. Would it matter? The songs are pretty augmented pop songs with careful layers of guitar lines that become the beams and buttresses supporting the vocals. Sort of like architectural indie rock. Pretty neat record
From Delusions of Adequacy

Oh, this wasn't what I expected at all. From the cut-and-paste, black and white cover and the feel of this 7", I was expecting something dire and punk-heavy. Instead, both The Makeshift Conspiracy and Sourtooth are powerful, post-punk rock bands that really blew me away. The sound here is very northwestern, ala Sleater-Kinney and similar grrl-rock bands, but they are both unique in their own rights and suprisingly powerful.  Sourtooth contribute two songs, and while the production is a bit sketchy at times, the sound is definitely not quite so ominous as The Makeshift Conspiracy. The alternating boy/girl vocals, at times shouting back and forth on "Plead Ignorance" and at times singing together is very cool. I love the bitter, riot-grrl sounding female vocals that contrast with the punk-rock sounding boy vocals, but neither sound is really here. Instead, this song is almost pop-rock, with more melodic guitar and some throbbing bass lines, but it has a bitterness and in-your-face attitude as well. "Smoke European Cigarettes" is definitely more punk sounding, the guitars a bit heavier, but punk like older Sleater-Kinney style. The two singers alternate verses here, neither with quite the emotional punch they had on the first track but with a heavier feel. There's even a bit of a retro rock feel here, especially when the male singer takes over. Cool, crunchy stuff from another band I haven't been introduced to before, and apparently the whole band goes by their last names only.  To read full review click here
